Jarnail Singh visits Harmandir Sahib, Honoured by SGPC

Jarnail Singh, a journalist with Dainik Jagran, the Hindi daily who recently hurled shoe towards Indian Home Minister Shri P. Chidambram today visited Harmandir Sahib. Jarnail Singh was accompanied by his family.

SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar honoured Jarnail Singh and his family at the Information Centre in Harmandir Sahib complex. Both had a talk for about 10 minutes in a closed room.

Sikh Jatha Arrives in Pakistan For Baisakhi Celebrations

Sikh Pilgrims In PakistanA Jatha of around thousand sikh pilgrims has arrived in Pakistan today on the eve of Baisakhi on 14th of April. SGPC organizes this tour every year to celebrate Baisakhi Mela at Nankana Sahib. The Jatha arrived by special train.

The pilgrims will attend Baisakhi celebrations at Nankana Sahib and then they will visit Gurdwara Sacha Sauda in Shekhupura on Wednesday.

SGPC justifies Akal Takht Photograph on Nanakshahi Calendar

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committe has justified its decision to use the photograph of damaged Akal Takht after 1984 Operation Blue Star to the Election Commission of India. Earlier this week, SGPC released Nanakshahi Calendar with the photograph of Akal Takhat Sahib which led to chorus of protest with Congress and other parties in Punjab as this move of SGPC could affect sikh voter’s sentiments.

Varun Gandhi, the BJP leader allegedly made hatred remarks about religions other than Hinduism last week have caused a political wrangle in Punjab. His anti-sikh remarks have been taken as a serious note by the Congress party and few radical sikh organizations like Dal Khalsa. As the ruling Akali-Dal has an alliance with BJP and with BJP leader making anti-sikh remarks, it will surely heat up the political battle field in Punjab.

Prime Minister of India, S. Manmohan Singh today visited Harmandir Sahib to offer thanks giving prayers after his successful recovery from recent heart bypass surgery. Prime Minister arrived at around 6 AM in the morning and listened to Keertan for around 40 minutes. He was accompanied by his wife Mrs Gursharan Kaur.

Laser show to replace Fireworks in Harmandir Sahib

Harmandir-Sahib In an effort to check pollution caused by Fireworks, SGPC plans to replace Fireworks with laser shows.

According to S. Avtar Singh Makkar, President, SGPC, "By now, aatishbazi has become an inalienable part of the Golden Temple’s festivities. Being a long-time observer of the damage pollution has done to the temple, I strongly advocate making positive changes in keeping with our tradition. So a light and sound show is the most plausible option. We will begin our feasibility study in a few days".

Jathedar-Vedanti Former Jathedar of the Akal Takht, Jathedar Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, has challenged his removal from the post. In a press conference yesterday, while talking to media persons Jathedar Vedanti questioned the process the SGPC had taken for removing him from the post of Jathedar of Akal Takht.

He said that he had been the Jathedar for nearly eight years and was upset by the way in which he was removed.
